Beobachtet

Selbstporträt \ Fotoserie \ 2014   Die Fotoserie ‚Beobachtet dokumentiert Standbilder von Überwachungskameras in Wiener U-Bahnstationen, und will damit darauf hinweisen, dass auch (oder gerade) triviale oder banale Aktivitäten wie das Warten auf Verkehrsmittel oft Gegenstand von kontinuierlicher Beobachtung sind. Die zentrale Frage dieses Projektes ist nun, wie die Beobachteten mit dieser Situation umgehen - sind unsere Handlungen (wie etwa Zeitunglesen, oder Telefonieren) während der Wartezeit beeinflusst vom Wissen oder zumindest unterbewussten Erleben des Überwachtwerdens? Handeln wir bewusster, wenn wir uns beobachtet fühlen, oder ändert sich unser Verhalten nur geringfügig, da ein gewisser Grad an institutioneller Beobachtung bereits alltäglich geworden ist, und keine Irritation oder Verlegenheit mehr hervorruft?

Self portrait \ photography series \ 2014   The photo series ‘Watched‘ documents freeze images of surveillance cameras in Viennese metro-stations, and aims to point to the fact that it is also (or precisely) trivial or mundane activities, such as waiting for a means of transport, that are subject to constant observance. The key question of this project now is how the observed deal with this situation – are our actions while waiting (like reading newspapers or talking on the phone) influenced by our (at least subconscious) knowledge of being watched? Do we act more consciously if we feel observed, or do we only slightly change our behaviour, since we are already used to institutional surveillance to such an extent that it doesn’t really irritate or embarrass anymore?
